Another long delay, huh? Not as long as the previous ones, though, as it seems it was only a little over a year since my last post 😅
Anyways, a lot has changed since then, and I’m now writing directly from Nagoya, Japan, where I’ve been living and working for the past six months. Yeah, you read it right, I left my country behind to pursue my oldest, most well hidden dream of coming to Japan! And so far, don’t even tell me about going back to Portugal. No, ヤダ。ヤダヤダヤダ. I’m far too happy here, freely embracing my passions with no restrictions. If I go back to Portugal, I’ll go back to being judged for liking anime and manga despite being over 30. 絶対無理
That being said, this is not supposed to be a the road so far kind of post… I’ll leave that for a later moment. Instead, I just wanted to share with you a couple of drawings I’ve worked on this past week. Truth is, I’ve always enjoyed drawing, but I’ve always been convinced I sucked at it. I can’t draw from memory, but at school I was expected to do so, and let’s say my arts teachers were far from encouraging, always (not so) gently saying I should stick to music instead (which I don’t regret, anyway, as music has always been my greatest companion, comforting me all the time). However, I grew scared of even drawing a cat, let alone a person… Yet, coming to a country so deeply connected to all forms of art, I felt compelled to try drawing again. Especially because some of my students are so crazy good and passionate about it. They kept challenging me to draw something with them during their break, and I ended up copying one of their drawings right in front of them. They were surprised because I was always saying I couldn’t draw. Since then, I’ve been on a drawing frenzy, drawing something almost every night (and often going to bed past 2am as a result).
I’ve been using the same model all the time, so I can see my improvement for myself (and also because I love looking at this model and have thousands of photos stored on my cloud). That being said, these were not my first attempts, nor the ones I’m most happy with, but that’s when I started to make the drawing more similar to the model! Hope you enjoy
btw, any comments on how to improve are more than welcome, both for drawing and coloring alike. For the time being, I’m stuck with my so very old 18-pencil Caran D’Ache Prismalo Aquarelle box, plus 6 pencils of the same collection bought separately over the years, though I’m considering getting myself a brand new 80-piece box for my birthday, since some of the pencils are already as big as my ring finger…
